Winger Does NOT Suck!

Let the beatings begin! I just know I'm gonna get a lot of shit for this, but...Anyway, this is coming from me, a musician and knows what the hell I'm talking about when I say the following, “Winger is NOT a shitty band!" I just got through listening to Reb Beach from Winger (on Eddie Trunk Live) who's pulling double duty playing for both Winger AND Whitesnake. Those 2 bands were huge in the 80's and are on the fast track to resurrecting their name and image. Reb actually was very cordial and gave a lot of props to one of the greatest guitarists EVER, John Sykes (no one under the age of 30 can even tie John's shoes). Winger got a lot of shit from the get-go about everything that they were and I call horse shit! This is all that whiny pussy's fault, Lars Ulrich (once one of my favorite drummers). If anything, he fanned the flames during interviews and having the famous "Kip Winger Dartboard".

The guys in Winger have great resumes. Kip played with Alice Cooper, Reb played/plays with Night Ranger, Whitesnake and Dokken, Paul Taylor played with Aldo Nova and Alice Cooper and Rod Morganstein who played with the Dixie Dregs. Point is, if you think Winger sucks, remember that these guys were good enough for the previous gigs they played and saying they suck means saying all the bands I mentioned suck, so know your history. Seems like all the people who I ever met that always talked shit about Winger was not a musician or at least a half decent one.

Growing up, I heard all the Winger jokes and yes I laughed at them(because it was funny so of course I'll laugh), but I still made a case for them after hearing the joke to much ridicule by the other party(see the last line of the previous paragraph). Bottom line, Winger is a hell of a band and they're still together and still touring, which is a lot more than I can say for a lot of other bands who people thought were better. So, still think they suck? Let the beatings begin

Sorry man...I can't be on the Winger is great bandwagon. They were good but they weren't one of the elite of the 80s.

I agree, Winger was one of the great bands of the late 80's/early 90's. I can honestly say I never owned one of their albums, but I did know the ones they played on the radio ... and I didn't change the station. That's how I decide a good band, seeing as how I'm no musician by any stretch of the imagination.

Winger's problem wasn't musicianship; they just didn't have any songs.

This was kind of an open ended trap of sorts. I really wanted to see how many people would react like the anon donor who just says "Winger Sucks" and that's it. They had no real support other than just a stupid rant, which proves my point even further. Funny thing is, if you see them live, it's a different story. 've seen pretty much all of the 80's heavy metal bands live and I can say (again from a musician's perspective) who sucked and who didn't, and there were plenty that did, remember Nelson?(And don't EVEN get me started on KISS) To me it was a matter of taste, I thought they were hell of a bad and put on a great show, point is they had integrity.(I feel a KISS rant coming on so I better stop it here)

I'm with Complaints Dept. Winger rocks.

\m/ Winger! \m/

Kip Wingers version of Purple Haze was most excellent... and Seventeen and Headed for a Heartbreak were High School anthems.

But Def Leppard still tours, too. they open walmarts. ;)

Funny you should mention Def Leppard, they're on tour with Whitesnake over in Europe. If they make that same card here, I'll find a way to see that. Lost count on how many times I've seen Whitesnake.

Forget all of your guys' favorite bands.
Rage Against the Machine is, to quote a particular old lady, "the best band in the fucking universe!"

And they sound amazing outside of the studio. All their sounds are by voice, bass, guitar, and drums/

I agree completely. Winger rules.

In fact, I know of an auction at www.backstageauctions.com that will feature a bunch of Winger stuff, and it comes straight out of Kip Winger's personal collection!

There's also a bunch of other cool stuff, like vintage t-shirts, backstage passes and guitar picks!

Totally sweet, and I can get everyone's Christmas gifts!

People say they have no musicianship??? Winger has 2 multi-platinum Cd's (Winger and In The Heart of the Young), tons of hits (Seventeen, Madalaine, Heading For A Heartbreak, Hungry, Can't Get Enuff, Miles Away, Easy Come Easy Go), a Platinum Selling Video (Winger Live), have played for some of the top bands in the world (Alice Cooper, Dokken, Dixie Dreggs, Jelly Jam (members of Dream Theater), Whitesnake, Night Ranger). Winger is full of talent and many guitarist (especially younger ones rediscovering the 80's) are learning that Reb Beach is one of the premier guitarist in the world. Winger just released a new CD that was critically acclaimed, the same can't be said for Metallica's last two failures. Winger kicks ass, and those who say otherwise haven't taken a second to even listen to them. BTW: Morrissey does not rock... he whines.

Metallica's last album was a failure? Death Magnetic? album was awesome. funny, but mentioning a real band like Metallica, who are now in the Rock N Roll Hall of Fame in the same sentence as the punchline for a whole genreof punchlines, Winger, is amusing. Winger was relevant for about 3 weeks in 1989. Metallica is still relevant 28 years after they started in the garage in 1981.

I wonder when Winger or anyone else from that garbage poser genre "hair metal" are getting any awards of any kind.

No matter how popular or unpopular or how cool or uncool a band and it's image may be a true musician will pass his judgment on the basis of the music he listens to. Winger is by far one of the best bands of the 80's, with some really good songs. Reb Beach was without a doubt a guitar virtuoso, while Kirk Hammet gets his knickers twisted with every solo he attempts. Now, we all know what a fuckhead Lars Ulrich is, and the same holds true to some extent for Hettfield. They were the cool young metal head rebellious dudes, who were arrogant and loud mouthed and dissed every band they could, but now they kiss ass and share stage with the likes of britney spears and korn. So fuck them and their lack of integrity. Their last decent attempt at music was either way almost two decades ago, their newer albums are by no means relevant, and they will be forgotten. This of course can not deny the fact that their early albums were monumental and immortal. I for one will always be a fan of their early works, but they do suck balls. In they end Metallic succumbed to status and money and all the other pro establishment things that they always displayed an aversion too, while bands like winger succumbed to the onslaught of three chord shit faced snotty nosed kids, who wanted bands with depressed teenagers singing about how life sucks, how their parents suck, and how they should die. Winger hasn't made a record that sucks, although there may be some that are not spectacular, but they do have a fair share of songs that clearly reflect the sheer talent they so obviously possess. Anyone who has the gift of hearing should be able discern this fact. Sadly the masses are always deaf to good music; if not the charts wouldn't look the way they do.

Some losers mentioned Metallica's presence in the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame and the awards they've one as testament to the so called fact that they are superior, while Winger, and other so called 'hair metal' bands suck. Why don't you find out the names of the other artists in that hall of fame. I hope you also know that Zeppelin and Sabbath did not earn any awards for decades since they started off. If you knew anything about metal and rock music you'd know that status and awards mean little; but then you're a metallica fan. The same band that were once outspoken enough to diss the grammies, but will now suck dic for the next award.
Another point that you should note: This loser Metallica fan also suggests that Metallica, having bagged a lot of awards, while the lack of awards to a band like winger should make them better. Going by this measure of musical talent, maybe you should listen to Britney Spears or N Sync or some other arse whipped band since they sure are appreciated a lot not just at award ceremonies, but even in terms of sales. People like you are a disgrace to the Metallica fans of yesteryear.

It's a pity that the best bands of the 80's got caught between the sexually confused, depressed juvenile followers of bands like Nirvana on the one side, and the testosterone pumping overgrown pubes, who only feel that they can be man enough if their metal is loud enough or dark enough.

Using metallica as an example of musical integrity and talent just pisses me off. If you want integrity and talent within that genre then talk about bands like Testament, Kreator and even Megadeth for that matter, not fuckin lame ass metallica. Their former roadies have more integrity.

shaunschon said...

I know that I'm gonna take a beating for this from all sides, but it realy irks me to see bands like poison mentioned in the same sentence as artists like winger and whitesnake. To me bands like poison and faster pussycat represent the whores of hair metal, who brought the genre to disrepute. Unfortunately artists like winger end up taking flak for these whores.

shaunschon - Looking through ALL that you said...be damned if I can find a point/place that I disagree on. I've been saying nearly the exact same thing for years, nice to see someone knows the deal as I do and in such detail. Thanks for putting your .02 on this old post.

I know this is a really late reply, but I hope you're doing well. It's great to find someone who shares the same musical sensibility that I do, and its even more awesome that you seem to share the same views I do. As would be obvious from my posts, I am a frustrated and bitter man, but I'd rather be frustrated and bitter with a good taste in music, than happy and successful listening to crap. Your article was like a breath of fresh air though, and I'm glad to have made your acquaintance.

Glad to see I'm not the only one who appreciates Winger as an excellent 80's band. I own their self-titled album on tape, and back when all I had was a cheap Walkman tape player, I'd listen to Winger while working out at the Y. I still like listening to them, but sadly don't own any CD copies of their albums. I did have their albums on my iPod before it crashed... Anyways, I digress. Although I like Metallica and many of the other bands mentioned, Winger stands out in my opinion as a kickass band. Thanks for the great article, and LONG LIVE WINGER!!!

Whitesnake is awesome... Winger not so musch, but still better than Mehtallica.

Guns n Roses sucks

shaunschon - That makes 2 of us that are bitter and frustrated.

Sam - Glad I was able to entertain you. It's a shame that the original members of Metalicca died in that horrible plane crash and had stand-ins that look just like them to take their place and drag their name into the mud....That's my story and I'm sticking to it.

anon #1 - Agreed on Whitesnake, despite Dave's personality issues and the same goes for the new Metallicunt

anon #2 - Short, but correct.

LOL @ the Metallica comment... As for GNR, I still like them. I don't listen to them near as much as some other bands, but they still get a decent amount of play in my 80s mixes and rock playlists. Metallica does seem worse now than their early stuff.

Here Anon1, if I want some good metal, I listen to Megadeth, Overkill or Blind Guardian, not lame ass Shitallica

Shitvana = Worst band ever

^ No, that title belongs to Guns n' Roses

Metallica DOES suck, they are fucking bland.
Testament is better than them in literally every field.
Shitallica = gay metal for false metalheads

I hate fucking Metallica.
Testament and Megadeth makes way better music.
Metallica sucks balls compared to Testament and Megadeth.

Craptallica = Gay
